Kingfisher Airlines employees get salaries after four months

A large section of Kingfisher Airlines employees, including pilots and engineers, received their salaries on Monday after a delay of nearly four months, airline sources said.

"In fact, we paid the salaries of all employees on April 4 itself. However, due tosome back-end problem in one of the banks, a section of employees could not get it then," they told PTI here.

Chairman of the crisis-hit airline Vijay Mallya had last Tuesday assured his employees that their salaries would be disbursed in a staggered manner from April 4 to 10.

The airline has salary accounts in HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and ICICI.

Besides, the airline has also paid the second instalment of Rs nine crore towards the TDS as per the directives of the Tax tribunal, the sources said. The airline has outstanding dues of about Rs 349 crore.

Mallya is also understood to have informed DGCA about the payments made, as the aviation regulator had expressed concern that delays in salaries would impact Kingfisher's operations and affect the air travellers.

Facing the heat from employees, particularly the pilots and engineers who had had put the airline on notice by giving a deadline of April 20 to clear all their pending dues, Mallya had issued an e-mail to pacify the agitating staff.

Admitting that the salaries were "seriously overdue", Mallya in his letter promised to pay their salaries and other dues in a staggered manner, saying the problem had arisen as its bank accounts were frozen by tax authorities.

The tax authorities had last week de-freezed the accounts on March 31 after the airline paid Rs44 crore to the Income Tax department and another Rs20 crore to the Service Tax authorities.

INDABA 2012: Avis showcases offering in South Africa » Travel Event News
There are numerous reasons why Avis Rent a Car is the leading car rental company in South Africa, not the least being its extensive fleet, the largest in the country offering the widest range of choice.

“We are very sensitive to our customers’ requirements,” said chief executive Wayne Duvenage.

“And quick to respond to requests which point to changing needs and tastes. This helped lead to the recent introduction of the Toyota Avanza, our new small, people-carrier which transports five people plus luggage.”

The Avanza joins two other people carrier vehicles, the Toyota Fortuner, a 5-7-seater vehicle and the Hyundai H1, an eight-seater, both acquired to satisfy the needs of customers.

“We ensured that both the Fortuner and the Hyundai H1 are automatic and diesel-powered, since this fulfills the specific preferences of many inbound travellers,” added Duvenage.

“We have also noticed that these vehicles are responding to a new trend we have discerned which entails a marked move from guided tours and coaching charters to self-drives.

“These tourists obviously need bigger cars which have more luggage space and feel safer and more efficient over long distances.”

The same need for more luggage space has motivated Avis to update our group D automatic entry-level vehicles from hatch-backs to sedans, and from 1 November, all entry level cars will also be air-conditioned.

For the more environmentally-conscious, Avis offers the more recently introduced Honda Hybrid Jazz. Avis of course, is renowned for its environmental stance, being the only CarbonNeutral accredited car rental company in South Africa.

All this choice comes within the context of a fleet in constant renewal, with average mileage of approximately 15,000 kilometres and a full safety check on every vehicle each time it is returned from rental.

The 24/7 call centre adds to peace of mind, ensuring that no matter where a client might encounter an unexpected incident, help is at hand.

Avis is considered Africa’s Leading Business Car Rental Company by the World Travel Awards.

INDABA 2012: UNWTO prepares for Victoria Falls showcase » Travel Event News
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has given a decisive stamp of approval on how Victoria Falls is shaping up as the signed-and-sealed destination for its August 2013 global General Assembly.

UNWTO executive director Zoltan Somogyi led a delegation of three on an appraisal visit to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone (Zambia) in the first week of March 2012.

He told a wrap-up meeting that he truly believes the 2013 general assembly will be very successful and that the private sector will play a key role.

Blanca Peral, the UNWTO programme chief, called their site visit experience “enchanting” and said the hospitality the UNWTO experienced was “generous and imaginative.”

Also on the appraisal team was Helda Tomas, UNWTO deputy regional director for Africa.

The team said they were inspired by the unity of purpose between co-hosts Zambia and Zimbabwe and Somogyi said the two countries only needed to smoothen their transport system for inter-venue traffic.

Meanwhile a Zimbabwe government cabinet taskforce is reported to have intensified work on mobilising resources for the summit and is seeking US$150m to upgrade Victoria Falls Airport and US$350m to build two more hotels and a conference venue.

The Victoria Falls Hospital has been allocated US$6.9m; roads rehabilitation $3.7m and the upgrading of the water supply system US$15m.

The event is expected to bring together 3,000 delegates from about 176 countries and will be a massive boost to Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.
